Stress in the Family
Having a child with this disease can be very stressful because the child is clearly in discomfort emotionally and the parents can sense this. It causes distress as well because the child exhibits erratic and sometimes uncontrollable behavior.
In many ways, the parents of a child with this disease can never truly let go and relax because they are on guard twenty-four hours per day.
You can build a strong and positive Family environment by focusing on your strengths, resilience, and giving love every day.

Strategies to Manage Stress
There are several different strategies that can be employed in order to relieve stress.
First of all, it is necessary to take a break from caretaking for the autistic child every once in a while. This means hiring a babysitter or caretaker for a day off.
Also, the parents of a child who suffers from this disorder can practice stress relief methods such as meditation. They can use deep breathing techniques to focus their meditation practice. They can also retreat to a quiet area in order to escape the stress of caring for the child who is autistic. Parents may take turns looking after the child.
Coping with Parenting a Child who is Autistic is Difficult, Yet Possible.

While the process of acceptance that the story you had for the life of the child you carried is now completely changed, nothing has prepared us for the utter devastation that all of the progress we made from therapies, schools, tutors, etc throughout the elementary and middle school years can come to a crashing halt. When my daughter began the transition from school to “adult” life she begin to regress and is now at the point that she is on so many medications but nothing is helping. It is very painful to watch all of the new hopes and dreams we had for her completely evaporate into just praying she doesn’t have the next melt down or accident while we are not at home. Little by little our lives have become more closed in with no real help. I am writing this because there is much needed research to be done on adults on the spectrum and ways we can enrich their lives to be the best it can be. These beautiful children grow up….now what???
I have autistic grandsons who are now young adults. Where do I find info and services for them?
